National Gallery/Westminster Schools movement project
We have established a strong partnership with The National Gallery, engaging two local Westminster secondary schools, Westminster City School and St Marylebone CE School, to work on the artistic resonances of protest and rebellion in visual arts and dance.
Working towards a joint event, and collaborating on themes inspired by Shobana’s latest production Clorinda Agonistes, art and dance students worked on creating and devising all aspects of a show, usually performed at the National Gallery (or online during COVID restrictions). Jointly, students documented their artistic journey, while ‘responding’ to each other’s discoveries in between sessions.
‘Thank you to Shobana Jeyasingh Dance for offering us the opportunity to work together. I feel really lucky. My students have benefited so much from this project. They have been pushed as dancers and challenged as choreographers, and have a deeper understanding of the work of Shobana Jeyasingh in more than one way. I know that it’s been an enriching experience. – E. Montsumi, Dance teacher St Marylebone School, part of the National Gallery partnership
