Shobana Jeyasingh Dance is currently seeking to appoint a new Chair of the Board

Shobana Jeyasingh Dance (SJD) seeks to appoint an individual with experience as a Trustee in the arts/charities sector to succeed Amanda Cupples as Chair of the Board by the end of 2024.

SJD’s Board plays a central role in the company and is responsible for supporting the development of the Company and, where appropriate, scrutinising its affairs. Trustees have diverse skill sets that reflect the ambition and scope of the Company’s work, and all Trustees lend their expertise and networks to support the ambitious team at SJD. Above all else, Board Members have a passion for Shobana’s work, and are enthusiastic in helping shape the future direction and progress of the Company.

The Chair of the Board leads the Trustees – there are currently eight in post – and has overall accountability to stakeholders, funders and the Charity Commission for the performance and good governance of the company. Our Chair needs to be an effective and collaborative communicator, a generous relationship builder and passionate advocate for the work of SJD. The ideal candidate will have previous experience in working with boards, either as a Trustee or Executive, and therefore an informed understanding of how to ensure best practice in the governance and leadership functions.

We envisage that our Chair will hold, or have held, a senior position in a cultural organisation or social-impact charity and will have significant experience of working with different kinds of teams and with complex budgets. Experience in fundraising and a wide professional and personal network will be valued.

We are very open to expressions of interest from a range of candidates with experience at a senior level. While it’s not essential to have a background in dance, an understanding of the distinctive nature of contemporary dance production and presentation will be useful. It is important that our Chair understands, or can learn quickly, the complexities and challenges of creative sustainability in the current climate.
