“I and everyone at Shobana Jeyasingh Dance (SJD) feel extremely honoured to play our part in commemorating the memory of Regina von Planta.
Regina was a wonderful and generous friend of the company for many years. She became a much-valued member of our Apsara Circle, which is the name given to a group of our closest supporters. Apsaras are celestial dancers in Indian mythology and Regina was indeed a very committed Apsara. She not only attended our shows but also took the trouble to visit our rehearsal studios and see the process up close.
I feel extremely privileged that she connected to my choreography so personally. She brought a warm sensitivity and appreciation to the dance works that I created. Her passion for dance and movement aesthetics always shone through. As an artist one could not ask for a better supporter and friend.
Motor Neurone Disease sadly took Regina from us and we mourn her passing deeply. Working with the human body as I do, I am always aware both of its tenacity and brilliance as well as its fragility and temporality. It is fitting, and very much in keeping with Regina, that in honouring her we honour the body in its capacity to create meaning both in dynamic movement and in peaceful stillness.
Regina’s love and support of my company will always be a source of inspiration.”
