Kamala Devam


Raised in San Francisco, Kamala trained in Bharata Natyam for twelve years under Kalakshetra graduates Katherine and K.P. Kunhiraman and received her degree in contemporary dance performance/choreography at San Francisco State University in 2001. She has performed Indian dance professionally in Malaysia, India and the UK and toured the US and Mexico with California Contemporary Dancers.

In the UK, Kamala has toured numerous productions internationally with Shobana Jeyasingh Dance, performed in the London 2012 Olympics Opening Ceremony with Akram Khan Company, toured internationally with Sadhana and ATMA dance companies and worked with choreographers Luca Silvestrini and Stephanie Shober. She has also performed for English National Opera and Akademi as well as rehearsal directed for several London-based dance companies.

Kamala has co-choreographed two pieces and a short dance film in London with partner Seeta Patel which have been presented in competitions and performance venues in New York, Germany and the UK. Their dance film The Art of Defining Me won Best Experimental and 2nd Best Overall Film at The Lab Film Festival in London in June. Kamala has performed her solo FretLess at the Southbank Centre, Rich Mix and The Place in London and this summer at the Ellen Stewart Theater in New York.
