What we do...
Founded in 1988, for the past 20 years the company has been working to create exciting and engaging
performances that "tell the stories of our time"
Using a rich mix of what we believe is the best of new music, new media and contemporary dance the
company also taps into the deep wellspring of South Asian dance technique Bharata Natyam.
Driven by the choreography of Shobana herself, we specialise in developing work with some
of the most exciting musicians and artists of our times. The company has commissioned many
new pieces of music, now heard round the world. These include Michael Nyman's String Quartet
No. 2 (Configurations) as well as work with contemporary favourite Kevin Volans.
Well travelled.....
The company is based in Islington, London. Touring throughout the UK takes up about half the year.
Internationally we make regular visits to Italy, and we have been invited for special festival
appearances in Hong Kong, Seoul and New York.
This international outlook is reflected by the core of the company, the dancers. We are able to
recruit the best from every continent and in the current tour, feature artists from America, Spain, and India.
Education and more......
The company's education work includes workshops, technique classes, residencies and placements. Many of these
activities feature company dancers, several of whom are skilled teachers. We have worked with a wide range of
people including women’s groups and asylum seekers. This year SURFACE TENSION (2000) is a central study piece
in the Performing Arts GCSE. We are always delighted to discuss projects and if you would like to work with us
contact zoe@shobanajeyasingh.co.uk for a chat.
